| Whitney is special. From the first time her Aunt Anne Gilbert meets her at her mother's funeral, she knows Whitney is a "diamond" rather than the simple cameo her father seems to want. Whitney, grown up a bit, sets her sights on Paul Sevarin and stops at almost nothing to get him, to the point that her father finds no other recourse than to send her with her Aunt and Uncle to France to see if they can make any progress with her.

During the visit, a price is set for the hand of Martin Stone's daughter in marriage. The deal is made and Clayton decides to set about courting his bride, there's just one problem.
