Sam and Jules were best friends since they were nine. The story begins at the start of senior year. Jules and Sam attend a party, each girl discussing what they would like to do after school. Jules and Sam are both dancers and are working with their group, working towards a tour at the end of the year.
Their plans are halted when Jules begins to feel pain in her hip and after several attempts to sort out the problem finally finds that she has cancer. Both Jules and Sam are rocked by this discovery but agree to find a cure. Jules becomes increasingly worse and decides to give up chemotherapy against the wishes of her family. The book describes both Jules' and Sam's reaction to the cancer and how they feel, often recalling memories from their childhood. Sam and Jules both realize they are growing apart from each other as Sam's relationship with her mother is increasingly wrought with arguments and Jules' family finds it hard to cope with her cancer. | ||
