Vally Mulford unexpectedly finds himself amanager of a large hog farm. Even though he grew up on a farm, he felt very unprepared for this new responsibility.
We follow Vally as he learns to tend to the pigs' health, and manage their breeding, and as he tries to cope with a growing number of deaths among the babies. As he learns to manage the farm, he also begins to discover the sense of humor, habits, social interactions, and tender moments that the pigs have, The move to the pig farm requires him to leave his new wife, and the book describes the struggles of a young married couple being separated so early in their marriage.
