A Man for Amanda by Nora Roberts

Amanda Calhoun is busy planning her sister's wedding and preparing for the renovation of the house into a hotel. When her future brother-in-law brings his friend Sloan in to do the renovations, Amanda finds herself distracted.

Meanwhile a handsome man asks her to dinner. Sloan is jealous when she goes, and he is determined to win her over, which she does. They begin a wild affair and all is well until one night Sloan proposes. Amanda is upset and runs off, but she interupts a burgler. She screams for Sloan, and they are both almost killed while the burgular, who is the man who asked Amanda out, gets away with the Calhoun papers. He hopes to use the papers to find the Calhoun emeralds.
