Michel Pernaud and Sophie Paserano are students at New York University in Manhattan. Michel earns money on the side as a French and Spanish translator and lives with his parents above their restaurant, Le Poisson, in the Village in New York City. He wants to marry his girlfriend, Sophie, but her father is equally as determined to prevent his daughter from marrying Michel and considers Michel unworthy of his daughter.

Michel's fortunes take an upward turn when he starts to work for Frankie Paserano who is a rising real estate mogul. His most important job is assisting Frankie make the most important deal of his life with Mr. DuChamp, a french billionaire. Mr. DuChamp has a daughter, Bridgette, to whom he assigns Michel as her chaperone and guide to New York City. Bridgette provokes the jealousy of Sophie due to her sexuality, attractiveness and attraction to Michel.

The complications increase when Frankie begins to date Bridgette who can not make up her mind whether she wants Frankie or Michel. Functioning as a translator in all of these activities, Michel struggles to maintain his original goal of marrying Sophie.
