Book Review By Rachel
A Year and a Day by Virginia Henley

Scotland is the setting and the hero is the brave, noble Norman knight, Sir Lynx de Warrenne. He is charged with taking care of the castle of Dumfries. Lynx befriends Robert Bruce and is present at the start of the struggle for Scottish freedom led by William Wallace. Lynx is a somber, sober character who feels he is infertile after having never sired a child with either his wife or mistress.

Jane Leslie is the shy, gentle maiden who is given to Sir Lynx. She is a Celt to her very bones and the thought of mating with the feared Norman Knight repulses her. Her grandmother fears she will lose some of her mystical powers if she does it with Lynx, but as is usually the case, the women's wishes are not heeded.
Jane becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son and Lynx becomes a doting and devoted father. But Jane has to contend with his ex-mistress, who is bent on revenge with a war that will shake the foundations of both England and Scotland.
