|Plot Summary of Daughter of Fortune|
|"Eliza is a foundling child raised by a wealthy brother and sister. She grows up in South America, and falls in love with a young employee of her protector. She embarks on a passionate affair, but when the goldrush breaks out in America, her lover leaves in search of his fortune. Finding she is pregnant, Eliza stows away on a ship, where see meets Chinese doctor Tao Chien who looks after her and helps her disguise herself as a boy. Eliza spends a long time hunting for her lover before she learns the truth. Tao's life in China is woven into this tale, contrasting his lost love with Eliza's. There are smatterings of magical realism, and family secrets to be uncovered in the excellent and captiviting book. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down."
