This quite appealing not-quite-mystery focuses on Naomi Ash and her mother, formerly Patsy, now Madame Galinda; both spiritualists (or mediums) in the theme park-like town of Train Line, which is populated entirely by spiritualists, both traditional and new-age. When the body of Peter Morton is unearthed ten years after the opening segment in which Naomi is burying him, the question is: how and why did he die. More significant is the mother-daughter relationship, with very well-drawn characters (even the secondary ones). A few anachronisms (the back story is set in 1988) but fine, crisp writing. A good first novel.
