Being of noble heritage, Alanna of Trebond's future is set to be sent to a monastery and to be taught the ways of a lady. However, she has other plans. Adeptly switching roles with her twin brother Thom, she rides off to Corus, the capital city of Tortall, to King Roald's Castle to become a knight, while Thom goes to the monastery and studies to be a sorcerer. Disguised as a boy, she learns that the road to knighthood is not an easy one, for she has to master weapons, magic and proper conduct. She also grasps a better understanding of her magical gift.
