that contains the journal of her ansestor, Ailsa Rose.

From here, the narrative shifts to 19th century Scotland where Ailsa returns to Glen Affric, the Scottish village which she left years earlier when she abandoned her true love, Ian, to marry an englishman and see the world. Now a widow, Ailsa returns with her daughter, Alanna, who finds love with Ian's nephew. Ian has now married and has a family of his own.

However the peace of Glen Affric is disturbed when Ian's brother (the father of Alanna's husband) returns to the glen after a lifetime away. He plans to make the village a tourist resort, which would destroy its mystique. The village becomes divided into a web of betrayals and violence, as it becomes clear that Ian's brother will stop at nothing. When Ian is
forced to commit a crime to protect what he loves, it is Ailsa who stands
by his side, and the two realize that their love is still very much alive.
