Phillips, a former White House strategist and long-time commentator for National Public Radio, published this 2004 study of the Bush family going back to the current President's grandfathers and great-grandfathers, whose colleagues were involved in shipbuilding and armaments and helped Germany build its strength before the Second World War. Phillips shows how spying, dishonesty about one's background and business dealings, multiple loyalties, and preoccupation with profits and oil go deep into the Bush family roots, and he likens their search for power to royal European dynasties and restorations of the 18th and 19th centuries.
