Ten-year-old Anastasia lives in Massachusetts with her father, an English professor, and her mother, an artist. She is shocked to learn that her mother will be having a baby soon. She tries to come to terms with this, as well as her relationships with her teacher and her elderly grandmother. Chapters are bookended by Anastasia's lists of things she loves, and things she hates (many things in Anastasia's life end up on both lists at different times).
