Anne of Green Gables Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Anne of Green Gables

Spinster Marilla Cuthbert runs the household of her bachelor brother Matthew Cuthbert in Prince Edward Island at the turn of the century. Once the Cuthberts get older, Marilla decides to send away to Charlottetown for an orphan boy to help run the Green Gables farm. The Cuthberts are shocked when they are sent a red-haired talkative little girl instead. Marilla wishes to send the imaginative and odd Anne Shirley back to the orphanage, but the normally shy Matthew is charmed by the girl. Marilla agrees to keep Anne on a trial basis until the matter can be resolved. Anne can't seem to keep out of trouble, however, and she seems to be always entangling herself in disastrous and hilarious adventures.

Sensible Marilla and taciturn brother Matthew Cuthbert, the owners of Green Gables on beautiful Prince Edward Island, unintentionally adopt the redheaded Anne Shirley. The impulsive, wistful, loquacious, and accident prone orphan proceeds to finds "kindred spirits" in her nosy neighbors, fellow schoolmates, and only person able to compete with her spirit and ambition in the quiet Canadian town of Avonlea, dashing Gilbert Blythe. A coming of age story with humor, romance and lessons to learn - readers can ride the highs and lows with Anne, and find within her personal trials "scope for imagination."

Anne is an orphan with a wild imagination, and loving nature. She is "accidentaly" adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, with heartwarming results. It's a wonderful story for adults and children alike.
