A New York detective notices a trail of blood outside of his apartment building. He thinks about where this could lead when a naked individual comes screaming out of the ally and gets hit by a car. As he goes over to investigate the man's last word to him was atmosphere. People start showing up all of the place with missing genitalia and totally covered in blood. Next to the bodies is an object that they were guarding with their life at the time. Towards the end of the book you are to discover with the detective that this object is the atmosphere trying to gain control over the world.
