Bird By Bird Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Bird By Bird

Anne Lamott describes the frustrations and pitfalls that many aspiring writers go through, in her funny, conversational chapters. The stories she divulges of her life reinforce the fact that all writers have neuroses, and use their neuroses to heighten their senses and produce great writing.

The book starts off describing her Lamott's father, also a writer, and weaves in writing tips, like "how to get through a first draft" in with Lamott's description of developing her own writing abilities.

The book is inspirational and reassuring to aspiring writers, but, beyond telling each writer not to give up at the first stumbling block, there's not much to be gleaned about the overall writing process that you couldn't find in other "self-help" writing books. The lack of writing help, however, is made up by Lamott's enjoyable tales of how she came to be a writer.
