After breaking up with her boyfriend of ten years, twenty-five year old Kate, who works in human resources at a new york city newspaper, is told to fire a popular employee. The dessert cart lady has insulted one of the lawyers who represents the paper, and this man, Stuart, is engaged to the head of human resources at the paper. After the dismissal, the employee sues the paper for wrongful dismissal, and Kate, who is already feeling guilty about her rose in the case is asked to lie by her boss. When Kate meets the lawyer who will be defending the paper she is prepared to hate him. He is Stuart's brother after all. But when they meet, Kate discovers that Mitch is kind, attractive, and just as horrified as she is about what is happening at the paper. Together, Kate and Mitch embark on a quest to expose the corruption at the paper.
