Cemetery Girl Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Cemetery Girl

It's been 4 years since Tom Stewart's daughter disappeared without a trace, his marriage falls apart yet his hope that she will be found alive never waivers. Caitlin Stewart was 12 years old when she disappeared while walking her dog a few blocks from home. It had been four years now and her mother Abbey decided it was time to have a memorial service for her daughter. She and husband Tom also decided to get rid of the dog that reminded them of their lost child. Tom takes the dog to the pound and goes home through the cemetery and sees the headstone dedicated to his daughter. He still does not think she is dead. but it seems like he is the only one. He still keeps the porch light on for her and the front door unlocked.

After the 'mock' memorial, Tom notices a closeness between his wife and the Pastor. Abbey tells him she is moving out, renting a room to be closer to the church, to get on with her life. Tom's half-brother, whom he hardly got along with, comes around to set Tom up with a woman advocate that helps families with lost children. It seems this woman has connections with other kids that may have information on other missing kids. At the same time, Tom continues to walk through the cemetery hoping for new leads. He notices a small girl hiding behind a headstone. She runs but not before she leaves a note "He took her" was all it said.

After meeting with the advocate, new leads seem to be popping up. Tom meets a young girl at a strip club that had seen Caitlin 6 months earlier. She was with an older man, doing a lap dance for money. She gives the police a description, they check it out and find they know who the guy is! They had even suspected him at one time through his criminal record.

The investigation seems to get closer and then one day Caitlin appears. She is now 16, thin, a bit disoriented, and pale. After a check up her parents take her home. She is quiet and angry. She tells her parents 'Never ask me what happened or talk about it." After some time of acclimating, more things about her disappearance come to light. The suspect is arrested then released. Tom goes to his home to confront him but the guy just keeps telling him he wants to see Caitlin again, they love each other. It turns out Tom's brother knew the guy through a drug dealer. They even suspected that he may have 'sold' Caitlin to pay for money he owed a drug dealer. The mysterious girl at the cemetery is now the suspect's next victim. She left the note for Tom to help save Caitlin. Finally Caitlin shares bits and pieces of her disappearance with her dad thinking he was going to let her return to the suspect. But that was never going to happen. Luckily for Tom, as months went by, Caitlin moved in with her mother and she and her dad finally can have some sort of a relationship and heal.
Best scene in story: I liked the scene when the dad, Tom, goes to the suspect's home and confronts him without killing him.

Opinion about the main character: I liked Tom's determination to never give up in hoping to find his daughter. I liked that he followed every lead no matter how small.
