   Claire Hollybrooke's father has been accused of being the notorious jewel thief that has plagued London, the Wraith. In order to acquit her father, she dons a disguise as a dowdy companion to infiltrate her grandfather's residence, which is the home of her mother's noble family which had cast her out when she fell in love with and married her tutor. Claire believes that her mother's family has somehow framed her father due to their supreme dislike of him.

   Simon Croft, the Earl of Rockford, is secretly working for Bow Street as an undercover investigator and is the man who has arrested Claire's father, although she does not know this. They meet when Simon decides that the first Lady he meets at the ball shall be his wife, and begins courting her young charge, Lady Rosabel.
    Rosabel, who believes Simon a perfect match for her companion, pretends to accept his suit and promptly throws Simon and her companion together at every opportunity. Simon and Claire begin to feel a deep passion for one another, but he must marry a woman suitable enough to carry on his family's name, and she cannot give up her disguise until she finds the real thief and clears her father's name. Despite the odds, the two find themselves drawn together by a deep love that must be used to conquer all the odds against them.
