This comedy is about Peter Werner Ernst, a medical resident at a critical care unit of a hospital. He goes without sleep making sure that his patients don't die, at least until the morning shift where he can deal with the paperwork. He meets Felicia Potter, whose father is a vegetable at the unit. Felicia tries to seduce Peter into making her father a slow code (where you let the patient die), while her sister wants to keep him alive at all costs. This book deals in an irreverent way with the medical profession's ability to keep someone alive long after quality of life has deteriorated.
