Damage Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Damage

Josephine Hart's initial novel Damage is an obsessively dark and intense work. She writes about a middle aged, British doctor, Stephen Fleming and his family. The doctor has a pretty and loving wife along with decent children, one of whom has a young girlfriend/fiancée-to-be named Anna. Stephen and Anna are attracted to one another instantly and begin an illicit affair despite the dangers to themselves and everyone around them. Anna herself had a traumatic background due to her brother's self-inflicted death years before. There is no fairytale ending here as the affair has tragic results.
