Varina Cameron is sent by her uncle to Florida to care for his younger brother's son. Her uncle's brother, Andrew, has changed a lot since the last time Varina saw him. He used to be fun-loving and carefree. Now he's just a brooding enigma, a stranger. She determines to find out what happened to make Andrew this way. At the same time she must try to discover why Andrew's young son, Jamie, won't talk. It all involves the mystery surrounding the death of Jamie's mother, Theodora. Meanwhile, strange, unexplainable things are happening to Varina. Somebody wants her to die. But who? And why?
