This is a hysterically funny telling of American history from the perspective of Dave Barry, a beloved American comedian. He begins with the Pilgrims and works his way through to the Reagan administration. He even provides maps, none of which are serious, all of which are funny. Barry actually does have a solid knowledge of American history, which makes the book even funnier. He is able to cite specific acts or tariffs, but with his own humorous spin.

The book has no plot; it simply follows the sweep of American history. Barry focuses on political and social history. The book certainly does not take itself seriously, but it is a very well-crafted and hilarious novel.
