A Deep Deceit Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Deep Deceit

Suzanne lives with her painter boyfriend Carl in the seaside town of St Ives. They have friends in Will, owner of the Logan Gallery and a regular visitor to their house every time he sells one of Carl's pictures, Mariette, the kind-hearted library assistant whose racy conversation makes Suzanne blush deeply and laugh at the same time, and the loud-mouthed drunken Fenella, who seems too familiar with Carl whenever they meet in public.

But Suzanne has dreadful recurring nightmares. Orphaned at the age of three when her parents were killed in a road accident, she was brought up by her grandmother who had her educated privately, then married her to the Reverend Robert Foster, an alcoholic and wife-beater. After Carl rescued her from this terrible existence, the nightmares became less frequent - until a spate of poison pen letters and graffiti on their front door brought them on again. Suzanne and Carl feel they are being watched.

Convinced that unfinished business from her past has come back to haunt her, she goes to the police and makes a shattering confession. They think she is wasting their time with lies and Carl, angry at what she has done without consulting him, takes her away to a small hut in a deserted field miles away from anywhere. He assures her it is for her safety, but soon she finds that there are more sinister reasons – and discovers his horrifying past as well.
