The review of this Book prepared by Raymond Schwartz
Alan Millard is Reader in Hebrew at the University of Liverpool, an archaeologist, and author of several academic works. He here presents a popular account of a broad sample of historical sites and items from the Israel of the first century AD. Many good photographs and diagrams are backed up with explanations both concise and plain. This would make an excellent text for school study or general use. There are six sections. 1) Daily Life: eg, stone water jars such as they had at the Wedding at Cana; a five-man Galillean fishing boat. 2) Rulers of the Land: eg, the Herods; Pilate and the Romans; money and coins. 3) Religion: eg, The Jerusalem Temple; Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls. 4) Death and Burial: eg, The Tomb of Jesus?; the Turin Shroud. 5) Writers: Philo, Josephus, Romans, other Jews. 6) Gospel Records: eg, the oldest gospel texts; Finding the true text (textual criticism). There is a further reading list and an index. Some of the most basic things, such as the stone water jars and the explanation of why they had to be stone, are the most effective at bringing that century to life.
