This is a delightful and fascinating book about dogs (and their human trainers and companions) who do amazing things. Some are performers, others are workers (animal herder, nursing home resident and companion, termite sniffer who outperforms humans and machines, professional arson detecter, forecaster of a master's epileptic seizures), and still others do incredibly dangerous work: the Newfoundland who leaps from helicopters into the sea off Italy to rescue drowning people; the German shepherd pair who hunt for live land mines in Bosnia. There's an actor (malamute-timber wolf mix) and a Jack Russell terrier who sweeps planes for brown tree snakes in Guam. There's even a pet Search and Rescue team (weimaraner and bloodhound), and an "Eco-Agent" -- a Border collie in South Africa who catches abalone smugglers and has her own bodyguard (a German shepherd) because of death threats from the smuggling trade. The book has a color portrait of each of these marvelous dogs, and further black-and-white photos. An inspiring and often very moving book.
