The only work Rachel can find is at a drive-in theatre owned by Gabe Bonner, who either does not know or does not care about Dwayne. Gabe has lost interest in life since his wife and child died in a car accident, but he starts to admire Rachel's determination to survive and provide for her son. Rachel starts to fall in love with Gabe as he stands by her despite the attempts of the town folk to make her leave. Neither want a relationship but they cannot stop the love and attraction they feel. Gabe's large family soon get involved because they think Rachel is a gold digger. But slowly, the two wounded people start to heal each other.
