Daine is a young woman traveling with companions of the Tortallan king to an unfriendly new country. She can talk to animals and shape-shift as well. Her king wants her to go and heal the Emperor Mage's precious birds. When political matters go wrong, Daine get special powers from Carthak's main goddess, The Graveyard Hag, so she can turn heal dead animals.

In this book Daine goes on a peace mission to Carthak with a number of her friends and elders. But both Daine and Numair know that something is not right. The book ends with Daine being kidnapped by the Emperor, Daine escapes and finds out that Numair has been killed by the Emeror, Daine tears down most of the Emperors palace with help from a god and finds the fleeing Emperor. But in one last attempt to save himself, Emperor Ozorne manages to change himself into a Stormwing, thereby evading mortal justice and faces stormwing justice. We find out that Numair is not really dead and that Daine's friend Prince Kaddar will become the new Emperor!!!

It seems as though Orzone, the Emperor Mage is making amends for his previous deeds as he asks for ambassadors to be sent on a peace mission. Daine, Numair and Alanna head out for the peace mission but things are not all well in Carthak and it is up to Daine, with the help of the graveyard hag, to put things right using Daine's new found magic skills.
