The book excerpt catches Maris immediately, despite the fact that it is not as polished as the ones her family-owned publishing house usually receives--and despite the fact that the author doesn't offer a name, just his initials. Maris follows her instincts and tracks him down to his island hideaway even though the trip is an added strain to her already troubled marriage. Once she arrives, though, Maris begins to learn things about the book, its author, and herself that she may have preferred to leave covered.
