On his way to the airport after a visit to his friend Julian Rakozcy, Manuel González meets an intriguing divorcée when his vehicle collides with a moose during a snowstorm. Invited to take shelter from the storm by Alison Haldane, a self-reliant ranchwoman, Manuel performs a service his hostess regards as the saving of her life. Drawn to the woman whose courage he honors, Manuel frankly confides to her the special nature of his tastes in sensual pleasure. When she in her turn confides in him, forthrightly apprising him that she suffers from a sexual hang-up that renders her wary of submitting to a self-professed sadist, Manuel offers her assurances that persuade her to yield to him. The two mature sensualists enter a relationship that soon grows deeply satisfying to both.

Having accepted her lover's invitation to live with him while he dismantles his business—Manuel for many years led a brigade of professional soldiers—Alison meets his partner, Hector MacFarlane. Unsure how this slim, sardonic athlete regards her, she grows further disconcerted when Manuel tells her that Hector will oversee a program of exercise for her, during the weeks when he and his partner proceed towards the sale of the business. During the days that follow, Alison grows ever more fascinated by Hector's personality.
Needing both his partner, with whom he has long planned to collaborate on a home-based consulting business, and his new love, whom he regards as a treasure thrown into his possession by capricious Fate, Manuel devises a daring plan which he swiftly implements, so as to insure that his love for Alison does not fatally complicate his relationship with his business partner and fellow master. When unforeseen circumstances propel three people enmeshed in a dangerous triangle towards a crisis, Manuel resolves the problem in a most unconventional manner.
