Taking his cue from his father's words spoken after divorcing his second wife,"Well, it's all experience,...pity there had to be so much of it.", Martin Amis discloses details about his own life, including his divorce, leaving two young sons, the way his father left him and his brother when they were half-grown.
The memoir also includes the horrific death his first cousin, Lucy Partington, met at the hands of a serial killer in London when she was twenty-one.

What is most telling in the book is the regard Martin Amis holds for the American writer, Saul Bellow. From Amis's accounts of his relationship with Bellow, the reader gleans that this writer is really the father Martin Amis acknowledges as his literary inspiration.
In "EXPERIENCE", Martin Amis relates the story of his and his father's lives in a manner that draws you in and arouses your empathy through to the end.
