Duncan MacElgin, official Chieftain of the Clan MacElgin, has been ordered by the King to return to Scotland and bring is Clan back into order. Duncan left his clan in disgrace, with the cloud of suspicion over his Mother's death and with a sinful reputation of debaunchery. Upon his return, he is promptly attacked, forced to strip naked while his attackers try to tar and feather him, fortunately, his warrior skills help defeat his adversaries, her turn out to be his own Clan led by a dainty woman.

Marsali Hay is the daughter of the Clan's deceased Tackman and has conducted attacks on the English soldiers who are trying to tear down their homes to build a road. When she realizes the mistake in who they attack, she dociley allows Duncan to dictate punishment to her for leading the attack for the good of the Clan, who has run wild since the deaths of all the Clan leaders.
As Duncan struggles to take control and bring order to the Clan, he also struggles with the headstrong Marsali, who beauty and vivaciousness has intigued his passions. Marsali, who is informed that Duncan is betrothed to another, fights her attraction to Duncan, but her efforts are undermined by her wizard uncle, who has cast a love spell on the couple.
Duncan decides its his duty to see Marsali protected and married, but his own jealousy stand in the way. As the couple are drawn to each other in passion, they must struggle against Duncan's bethrothal, Marsali's spurned suitor and the English troops before they're paths lead them into love and marriage.
