Thirteen years later, Melanthe is a widow and political intrigue surrounds her as she must make a new marriage. At a tourney in England, the knight known as Green Sire challenges all other knights to fight him for the honour of Melanthe. She does not recognize the knight is Ruck, but after he wins, she accepts him as her escort to claim her father's castle in England. Melanthe learns her knight is Ruck and she tells him that his wife was killed.

Melanthe needs Ruck to help her avoid being a pawn in the political machinations of the Italian nobility. There are plots by three families seeking to marry her and obtain her fortune. She needs Ruck's honour, loyalty and strength, but it is his kindness and gentleness that soon wins her love. Ruck has loved Melanthe since he saw her 13 years ago and can see past the harsh exterior she presents to her political enemies. Despite having been celibate all these years, Ruck seduces Melanthe. The princess marries the humble knight but before they can love, they must discover and free themselves of the spies sent by the warring Italian families.
