This is a collection of short stories, as intense and well-written as anything I've read. Englander is a master. Most of the stories deal with Orthodoxy and the lives of the Orthodox, but it isn't necessary to be keyed into Jewish culture to understand them. Among the best stories in this volume: one about the last days of Jewish writers ordered executed by Stalin, one about a 50ish WASP discovering he's Jewish, and one dealing with the familiar problem of divorce for the Orthodox.
