Amber convinces a reluctant Bruce to take her with him to London, where they live together for a while. Bruce eventually leaves a pregnant Amber in order to pursue his own goals. Amber uses her wits to rise in society. She
becomes and actress, a mistress to wealthy men, and even the mistress of the king himself.

All the while, the man she truely loves, Bruce, comes in and out of her life. Bruce is attracted to Amber but refuses to marry her because he doesn't love her. Amber's life is an epic journey through restoration England, as she pursues the one man she loves but can never have.
