A straight shooting ship captain from New Orleans signs on a decrepit old freighter carrying breaker freight (no containers!) from New Orleans and Miami to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Captain encounters rich but cheap ship owners, thieving Haitian charterers, the corrupt police of the Duvalier regime in Haiti, desperate Haitians and Dominicans, a Haitian jail, and rolling seas and high winds tha threaten to break his old ship apart. It is a very realistic portrait of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica in the 1980s. Captain Hardberger experienced it all in person, and he gives a superb (albeit fictionalized - to protect the "innocent" ) account of what happened.
