Detailed Plot Synopsis of A Girl in Blue

The year is 1861 in this story. It starts with a girl who lives on a farm near a small village in Michigan in the 1860s. Her father is abusive and wants her to marry an abusive neighbor who had several children. She runs away to Flint, Michigan to stay with an aunt, and then ships out with a regiment to fight in the Civil War as a man. She ends up working in a hospital as a gopher. She fights in the first Bull Run. She shoots a man and ends up falling asleep to men who die in the night. She goes on a mission for the doctor she works for to get medicine from a doctor he knows on the Southern side. She meets the doctor's wife who ends up shooting her and eventually reports her as female to the Union. The doctor says she can no longer be a soldier, but he's friends with Pinkerton and may work as a spy. After she is trained her mission is to be a maid in Rose Greenhow's house. She is to find a diary. She finds the diary with the help of Rose Greenhow's daughter and Capt. Sheldon. She falls in love with the Capt. She turns him in as a spy when she catches Rose in his arms. He's not. He ignores her. She's depressed again. Goes home to Michigan to see her family, but is dressed as a man. Dad's dead, died in an "accident." Sister is going to marry the man who was supposed to marry the main character before she ran off. Main character, Sarah, goes back to Pinkerton Agency in Washington D.C.

When her father attempts to marry her off to another abusive man, she, Sarah, decides to take matters into her own hands and pretends to be a man to become a Union soldier in the Civil War. After Sarah's secret is found out, she becomes a spy for the Pinkerton Agency.

Brian Carmack on 4/1/2014 3:37:32 PM says: It begins with Sarah Louisia who live under an abuse father. She is stronger faster a better shot and smarter than any other boys in her town. Her father tries to make her marry a bad man. This pushes her off the edge she is forced to leave for herself and the war effort. She joins the second Michigan dressed as a man and begins a grueling walk to Washington. When there she meets Doctor Hammond who gives her jobs to occupy her time, she goes from house to house and asks for food and alcohol. She goes to her first battle and kills a man but then is rendered unconscious by a tree. When she returns to fort green how she is tasked to get supplies from a doctor in the south. However the doctor is deans and only his grieving wife is at home who shoots her and forces Sarah to take her to Dr. Hammond. The doctors wife then tells Hammond that Sarah is a girl. She then goes to work for a man named Pinkerton as a spy she is ordered to infiltrate and discover how Rose Greenhow was sending letters to the south still, and she was to find the location of her diary. she does this and then thinks that Capt. Sheldon was sending the letters. Though it turns out he was not. Sarah is heart broken. She goes to see her family her father is dead and her sister is marrying Eziekial the man she was told to marry at the beginning of the book.
