Sam Temple watched his teacher disappear in front of his eyes. It was a moment that will haunt him for the rest of his life. At one point he was learning another boring fact he had no interest and in the next his teacher along with every other human who was over the age of fifteen completely disappeared in the coastal California town of Perdido Beach. At first there is complete chaos as the town now free of adults has no system of control and no law to keep the young citizens at bay.

Sam sets out to find his main crush, Astrid Ellison and his friend Quinn Gaither in attempt to make some sense of the mysterious event that has caused all of the adults to disappear. As the trio reach the outskirts of town they find it is cut off by a mysterious barrier that is absolutely impenetrable. Sam also realizes he has been gifted with a special power that allows him to shoot green beams of light from his hands that kill any living thing they come in contact with. Freaking out about this new development, the group decides to map out the barrier and see how far it goes.

After hours of walking, the group discovers the barrier is resonating from the power plant on the outskirts of town. Sam has a bad feeling about going inside but Astrid convinces him to check it out. Astrid is terrified because she has been unable to find her little brother Pete who is only four years old and suffers from autism. Afraid he could be hurt, Astrid wants to find him as soon as possible. As the three of them begin to move through the different rooms of the power plant, they stumble upon Pete who reveals he has created the power but is unsure how it has happened. After some more investigating the group finds a map that shows patterns of radiation that are exactly where the barrier is making Sam wonder if this is all tied together with an accident that had happened years prior.

Later that afternoon, they head back to town and find private cars from the upscale private school Coates Academy driving into town and dropping students, all who have powers of their own just like Sam's. Sam is aggravated to see his twin brother Caine Soren whom he has never gotten along with. Caine reveals that they have discovered that powers began appearing before the barrier came up and people began disappearing. Caine also reveals his own power which happens to be telekinesis. Caine instructs the other the youth that he will be taken control of Perdido Beach in an effort to bring order to the chaos. It is also revealed that when a person turns fifteen they are shown a vision of their heart's desire and forced to make a choice prior to disappearing.

Sam confides in Astrid about his worries of disappearing when he turns fifteen which is shortly approaching. Astrid reveals she has the same concerns as well as she is on the verge of her birthday. Danger is also brewing as the youth that remains is broken up into various factions. There is the Coates Group led by Caine as wells the Coyotes who are another rebel faction who wish to gain control of Perdido Beach. When Sam, Astrid, Pete and Quinn are attacked by the Coyotes they narrowly escape, however they then find themselves at odds with Caine's group at Coates Academy. Caine captures them and determines they are threat to his rule, regardless of Sam being his brother. Sam and his group manage to work their way out of imprisonment and flee back to Perdido Beach with some of the students from Coates. They are joined by Lana who has the power of healing and an immigrant named Edilio.

Back in Perdido, Caine launches a full on attack with the students from Coates Academy and duals with Sam. The two launch an explosive battle with Caine using his telekinesis and Sam his deadly green light beams. As the battle reaches its climax, both Sam and Caine turn fifteen which brings the fight to a screeching halt. Sam and Caine, dazed and confused are faced with what seems to be their mother though it could be an illusion. She gives them the option to join her, however they are not sure where exactly that is. Sensing a darkness that could be a dangerous situation, both Caine and Sam choose to stay in Perdido and not leave the barrier.

As Sam and Caine return to the battleground, Caine finds himself injured and defeated. Sam lets him go, his love for his brother too strong to kill him. Caine retreats with the Coates students but offers an ominous warning that he will get his payback and letting him live was a grave mistake.
Best part of story, including ending: I disliked how the novel moved around from so many perspectives. It became very confusing. I also found that many of the plot devices were rehashed from familiar X-Men Comics.

Best scene in story: I loved the scene with Caine and Sam facing their mother and making the choice to stay with the other youth. It was so powerful and showed how much they thought of others rather than themselves.

Opinion about the main character: Sam is such a sweet young man and that sensitivity carries through the entire novel. I loved how much he put others before himself even though he was dealing with his newfound powers that were so deadly.

GONE is about life when everyone over 15 vanishes, and kids are trapped under a dome called the FAYZ. GONE's main character is Sam Temple, a 14-year-old boy living in Perdido Beach, who has to defeat Caine, his lost twin.

Sam meets up with Astrid Ellison, Quinn Gaither, and Edilio Escobar. He saves a hardware store and a day care from a fire, then leaves with his friends to find Astrid's autistic brother Pete. They find him at the Perdido Beach Nuclear Plant, then go back to Perdido Beach.Sam and Pete are revealed to have mutant powers. Some kids from Coates Academy, the other school, also with supernatural powers, come down and take over, including Caine Soren .After a long while of despair, torture and preparation, Sam and Caine have a large fight , but both blink out. However they somewhat get back into the FAYZ. There are also a lot of back-story characters.
Best part of story, including ending: I liked it because of the mix of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and so much more.

Best scene in story: The scene where Pete nearly kills Sam with his power.

Opinion about the main character: I like Sam's humbleness, the way he is always there and does not need to be called a hero to be happy.
