Her trainer is Theo Redmond, who is doing this for the money. Theo had to leave med school when his parents died and he was left to take care of his younger brother, Buddy, who has Down's syndrome. If Theo can help Lucy lose enough weight, he will be able to quit the Palm Club and apply to re-enter med school.

The story of Lucy's progress is told in chapters named for the month. Theo likes Lucy right away because she's smart and funny. Lucy, however, has to deal with her embarrassment about her weight. She wants him, but doesn't know what he wants. Her insecurities cause her to keep Theo at a distance. Theo, because he likes Lucy just the way she is, well before she has lost all her weight, patiently woos and wins her.
