Henry Russell is the Sheriff of a small town which is holding a homecoming party for a princess, who has brought her set of crown jewels. Jana Vargas and her family of gypsies are in town to view the jewels, which are connected to their family, and to hold a fair. Henry catches Jana hitchhiking and is suspicious of her behaviour; he later discovers that she is with a band of gypsies which raises his suspicions even more. He also discovers an intense attraction towards her.

At a reception for the princess, a pickpocket strikes lucky and Jana is taken aside for questioning, which brings her in contact with Henry. Henry wants Jana desperately, and during the questioning he kisses her and states his romantic intentions. Later Henry and his officers are keeping watch at the gypsy site to locate the princess and he meets with Jana again. During his search of the gypsy camp he cannot resist another kiss. Jana realizes now that she is also very attracted to Henry.
Henry and Jana continue to have misunderstandings regarding the stolen property.
