Isabel Darling is the child of a courtesan and a nobleman,even though she has never learned the identity of her father. To investigate the murder, Isabel decides to blackmail one of the men in the book into sponsoring her into society. Her first attempt,a Duke, is foiled by the man's son, Justin Culver, who thinks Isabel is a whore looking for a nobleman to dupe into marrying her.
Isabel finally succeeds to gain entree into society, but is constantly shadowed by Justin, who thinks her motives are dark. As Isabel grows closer to the truth, attempts on her life are made, and Justin finds that his feelings for her have grown into love, even though he tries to deny it. Together the couple discover Isabel's father, the murderer, and their love for one another.
