Hari Michaelson lives in a dystopia: a world with a rigid caste system, dominated by Big Business, where sedition can cost you not only your freedom, but your status and property as well. And he lives in a world where Actors are trained to carry out assassinations, thefts, etc., while carrying brain implants that record their every thought, deed, and sensation, and transmit them to thousands, millions, even billions of fans. But this is no virtual reality: rather, the Actors are sent to Overworld--an alternate-reality version of Earth with humanoid characters such as elves and trolls, and where magic is real. And Hari Michaelson is Caine, the greatest Actor of them all, who is growing tired of Acting. But he is forced to go to Overworld when his estranged wife, known as Pallas Ril, goes "off-line" in Ankhana, a city in Overworld: if he can't bring her back within seven days, she'll die. But the Studio that employs the Actors won't send Caine to rescue Pallas unless he also agrees to kill Ma'elKoth, the Emperor of Ankhana....
