The Saz-Kronians are close to the city and about to invade it.
Her parents get killed and a soldier, a friend of her aunt, consoles her. His name is Thenser Zavion.
When the city is taken and the officers of the SazoKronian army take the houses, her aunt kills herself.
She is now the mistress of the house, but she doesn't tell this.
The officer that comes to live in her house is called Keer Gurz and he is more of a scholar than a soldier.
She finds Thenser's name on a list of people to be killed. She saves his life. When the Saz-Kronian army retreat, he takes her with him. They suffer many hardships on the way to the north in winter and Gurz gets ill.
She meets Thenser, they make love and then he disappears.
The future emperor, Kahrulan, needs her money and she consents to a marriage. This means she will be his second wife.
Kahrulan notices she is still pining for Thenser and lets her go away. Now she starts to take control over her own life, instead of letting herself being dragged along. She tries to find Thenser and eventually does. They live near the coast for a while and are happy.
