The Russian Empire rises in the Ukraine with Kiev as the capitol. The Empire spreads North and to the East, but is crushed from 1240 to 1450 under the Mongols. Russia finally throws off the yoke, and about once a century has a powerful ruler--Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great. The Communists take over, fight back the German invasion of W.W.II, but must finally concede to capitalism and democracy.
