Chantal is a middle aged woman who lives with her somewhat younger lover, Jean-Marc, whom she helps support financially. She had a young child who died several years earlier, and she feels like the best part of her life is over. The couple is comfortable together, but Chantal begins to feel restless and thinks that she is no longer attractive to men.

To raise Chantal's hopes, Jean-Marc sends her an anonymous love letter. He expects that Chantal will tell him about it and laugh it off, but instead, she says nothing of it to him. Jean-Marc continues sending her letters, but he is troubled by her lack of disclosure. Chantal becomes obsessed with figuring out who her admirer is, and when it is revealed that Jean-Marc is the author of the letters, they have a big fight. Jean-Marc is hurt that she was so receptive of what she thought was another man's affection, and she is hurt that he would deceive her.
