If You Can Talk You Can Write Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of If You Can Talk You Can Write

Joel Saltzman struggled with crippling writer's block for years. He was sure everyone else was writing great literature and he was a fraud. He stopped writing altogether for five years. It was a miserable time for him. Then, he got a fortune cookie with the message, "To avoid being disappointed, minimize expectations." At first he ignored it, and then he thought that this is how he used to approach writing. He wasn't worried about making it great, he was just having fun. In this book he shares his wisdom. Don't let perfectionism stand in your way. Just write. In fact, don't even do that. "Talk" on paper. The title of the book comes from an observation Saltzman made. When people talk, they are much more open and less likely to worry about being perfect. But, they freeze when they have to write something. If you think of yourself as just talking with your pen or keyboard, your inhibitions fall away. Beside this, Saltzman also offers tips about rewriting, writing what you know, what you've researched, or what you're interested in. For the last topic, he also says not to discard your ideas because you think they're too boring. He gives examples of people who wrote successful books out of ideas that others would find boring. He also says not to worry about being original. Throughout the book are examples of success found by famous writers as well as goals reached by regular people who just wanted to write better.
