Invented Eden: The Elusive, Disputed History of the Tasady Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Invented Eden: The Elusive, Disputed History of the Tasady

A group of people, the Tasaday, were discovered in the southern Phillipines during the Marcos years by Manuel Elizalde, a Philippino government minister. Hailed as an isolated tribe, living a stone-age life and never before having contact with outside civilization, they were admired by such luminaries as Charles Lindbergh and Gina Lollabridgida. National Geographic ran a cover story.

But then doubts crept in as the journalists and anthropoligist arrived. Hoax? Exageration? Hemley starts from the begining and examines all evidence. The book gets a bit confusing at time with personal names unfamiliar to American readers and the blow-by-blow he said/she said/they said aspect of the case is sometimes tiresome. However, this book delivers the promise that the truth is more subtle and complex than can be delivered by a headline.
