First, guileless Jinx is recruited into the entourage of the egomaniacal artist"Tom Tom" Blalack. His promotor, Helsinki Braw, gets her into modeling and acting. Jinx's life becomes a blur of fittings, shoots, travel, parties, spending sprees, spartan diets, failed marriages, and obsessed men. Marsha, meanwhile, shuns men, moves to Paris, and slowly works her way up throught the ranks in the cosmetics industry, eventually starting her own line, "Miracle," in London.
Over 40 years, they keep in touch and cross paths many times. Their friendship even survives Jinx marrying author Jake Orben, whom Marsha has loved from afar for years, and whose work merely bores Jinx. Over time, Jinx's star begins to fall, but Marsha hits her stride. They lose touch for 15 years. When they reconnect, Marsha is in for a shock.
