Phoenix Smalls is a singer on the brink of superstardom. With her father as her manager, and the support of several high-profile producers, the young lady is about the take the music world by storm. There is one hitch, however: she is being haunted by the ghost of legendary ragtime musician Scott Joplin. As a much younger girl, Smalls was struck by a piano once owned by Joplin. This event starts the association between the singer and the long-dead rag man.

Eventually, Phoenix, with the help of her boyfriend Carlos, comes to accept her situation, learning to channel Joplin as he "speaks" to her through his music. She is able to recall events in his life, especially his musical compositions, many which have remained in obscurity since the start of the twentieth century.
