Lady Knight Keladry of Mindelan has survived the challenges of knight training and is now the second Lady Knight in the realm. But she feels discriminated against when she is sent to command a refugee camp instead of sent to battle. She soon learns that this is not a dirty job and she uses her commanding skills to help the camp flourish. The only problem is; Kel knows that a genius mage is using dead children to power his super-strong killing machines. When her enemy's soldiers capture the children of her camp, it is up to her to save them, but can Kel do it alone?

Keladry is only the second "Lady Knight" in 100 years, but she's done it all through hard-work, without magical abitlities like Lady Alanna's (character from an earlier series). She's been sent to the northern border of Tortall to command a newly-built refugee camp, even though she's only 18! She fights to win the respect of those in her command while keeping them safe from the invading forces of the north. While she is reporting in to headquarters, a group of children and adults are kidnapped from the camp. She goes after them, knowing that the children will be killed if she doesn't find them in time.
