Hannah, Nathanial's daughter, is now eighteen years old, and dreams of being a doctor. She is shoched when Liam, her childhood sweetheart, who has been missing for years returns.

But Liam has changed. He has become a pitiless bounty hunter searching for escaped slaves, in particular, one named Selah. Nathanial and Elizabeth come across Selah and they become involved in a plot to smuggle escaped slaves to freedom. Meanwhile, Hannah goes to New York City, with two purposes. She plans to learn about vaccinations so that she can protect Paradise from the smallpox, and to find out what made Liam change from the boy she loved to a heartless man. Eventually returning to Paradise with a vaccine and a few answers about Liam, Hannah faces the decision that she has dreaded for years. Should she make a life for herself in the white world, or join the Mohican, her mother's tribe?
